Police are not arresting anyone without specific allegation during the ongoing special drive across the country, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Nur Mohammad said yesterday.

“Police are only arresting the ones who are accused in cases or have arrest warrants against them,” said the police chief at the launching ceremony of official website of Chittagong range of police.

He brushed aside allegations that the special drive is politically motivated, targeting political activists and violating human rights of the innocent through harassing them.

Terming the special drive a part of their routine work, the IGP said recent rise in incidents of murder and robbery prompted the police to launch the drive.

AKM Shahidul Hoque, deputy inspector general (DIG) of police, Chittagong range, moderated the launching ceremony held at the DIG’s office where senior police officials of the region were also present.

Regarding implementation of reforms in the police, the police chief said they are yet to achieve expected success. “Overnight change isn’t possible in a British-era organisation.”

The IGP praised the initiative of opening the website and hoped that it would help the police receive direct feedback, suggestions and complaints from the general people.

Prof Ahsanul Hoque Parvez, chairman of Centre for Good Governance, also spoke at the programme.
