Government advisers yesterday said they will not waste time while making decisions about the release of detained former prime minister Khaleda Zia and her two sons after taking the “crucial step forward” to release Awami League (AL) chief Sheikh Hasina.

“We are coordinating everything. There is no scope to waste time. Highest efforts are being made,” Commerce Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman told reporters about the release of Khaleda and her sons.

Zillur said the government is considering the legal and humanitarian aspects before making any decision regarding the release of Khaleda and her two sons.

He was speaking to reporters after meeting Communications Adviser Ghulam Quader at his ministry.

Throughout the day in separate interactions with the press, Home Adviser MA Matin and Foreign Adviser Iftekhar A Chowdhury said processes are underway to release Khaleda and her two sons.

Iftekhar said the government would take a balanced approach in dealing with the BNP and AL over the “dialogue issue”.

The government will continue with the ongoing dialogue to thrash out agreements on a number of other election and post-election related issues.

“Open and tough discussions with all is necessary to create an environment of trust and a national consensus. The issue cannot be taken lightly,” said Zillur.

Referring to Sheikh Hasina’s release, he said, “We crossed another hurdle on our way to resolving the current crisis. We have started work to cross the next.”

Meanwhile, Khaleda Zia herself reiterated yesterday her resolve to stay in the country, asking the government to send her two detained sons abroad for treatment immediately.

Home Adviser MA Matin said, “There is a normal process. It will be followed if she [Khaleda] applies for it.”

Asked about any decisions made regarding the release of Khaleda’s sons Tarique Rahman and Arafat Rahman, Matin said, “I am not quite aware of the matter.”

Adviser Ghulam Quader, meantime, asked all to be patient and said, “There could have been a chaos had we disclosed the decision of Sheikh Hasina’s leaving [the country] earlier.”

REGIONAL DIALOGUE IN KHULNA, CTG
In parallel with dialogue with the political parties, the government will hold regional dialogue with cross sections of people in Khulna on June 21 and in Chittagong on June 28.

“The locals, people from all walks of life, would participate in the dialogue,” the commerce adviser told reporters after a meeting with Law Adviser AF Hassan Ariff, the home adviser and the communications adviser at the law ministry where they discussed the schedules of the ongoing dialogue with different social and professional bodies.

Like the dialogue with the business community, the government will hold talks with local government representatives and the labourers but the schedule is yet to be fixed.
