Calling for an end to the controversy surrounding his recent remarks, Gono Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday said the release of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina was not against the law.
He however said people hope that the caretaker government would remain “hundred percent neutral” and free from bias towards anyone.
The noted jurist also said he expects the government to hand over power to an elected government and make a dignified exit.
He was speaking at a press briefing at the Gono Forum headquarters in the city’s Arambagh area.
Replying to a query, Dr Kamal said those on trial will have to appeal to the government for release.
Earlier on June 13, he urged the military-backed caretaker administration not to yield to any pressure and go soft on corrupt people.
Making an oblique reference to Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina’s release and the process to free BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and her two sons, he wanted to know who within the government are making it “weak and take a soft line with the corruptionists”.
The comments were greeted with strong reactions from major political parties. They were described as “wails from a broken heart” and “made out of personal animosity”.
Asked whether Hasina’s release was lawful, the Gono Forum chief yesterday said, “Please let the bickering end. I am repeating what I have said before, that is, she was released on executive orders and in line with the recommendations of a medical board.”
Her release and talks with the chief adviser and other advisers were not contrary to the law, he continued. “I hope my comments will be taken in a positive light.”
Replying to another query, he said, “I have read in the newspapers that she [Khaleda Zia] doesn’t want to appeal to the government for release. You want to be freed but you won’t petition the government for that….how can it be.”
Dr Kamal said, “There should not be misunderstanding among those of us who are in politics.”
