A Dhaka University student and contributing reporter of daily Prothom Alo had both his legs cut off as his trousers got stuck in a railway clip when a goods train rushed in near Tejgaon Railway Station yesterday.

Saiful Islam Samin, a fourth year student at mass communication and journalism department and a resident student of Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall, met the tragedy while returning from his work assignment at Mohakhali.

His colleague Obaedur Rahman Masum said, “We went there to report on the problems of ward No. 37 residents. On our way back at around 11:50am, Saiful’s trousers got stuck in a railway clip. He could not free himself from it on time when a goods train was coming in very fast.”

Samin was rushed to the National Institute of Traumatology, Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation (Nitor) at Sher-e-Banglanagar.

Doctors said he was out of danger following major surgeries but would be under observation for 24 hours.

The son of a schoolteacher, Samin hails from Mathbaria upazila of Pirojpur.

Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof SMA Faiz, Proctor AK Firoz and Prof AAMS Arefin Siddque of mass communication and journalism department visited the injured student at Nitor.

The VC assured his family of providing treatment support for him.
