Morshed Khan, wife charged with amassing Tk 1.67cr illegal wealth

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday pressed charges against former foreign minister M Morshed Khan and his wife Nasrin Khan in a case filed for amassing Tk 1.67 crore wealth illegally and giving false wealth information to the commission.

Meantime, a Dhaka court directed the authorities concerned to publish an advertisement in two national Bangla dailies asking Morshed Khan’s son Foysal Morshed Khan and his wife Shyama Shezan Khan to appear before it by June 29 in a graft case.

Another Dhaka court yesterday allowed the ACC to interrogate detained former BNP lawmaker AKM Fazlul Haque Milon at the jail gate about his ill-gotten wealth.

MORSHED Khan CASE
ACC Assistant Director Talebur Rahman, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, submitted the charge sheet against the couple to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, Dhaka showing 24 people as prosecution witnesses.

The IO prayed for issuance of arrest warrants against them and the order to attach their properties, as they have been absconding since the case was filed.

In the charge sheet, the IO mentioned that Morshed Khan had submitted his wealth statements of Tk 17.41 crore to the commission on July 10 last year.

But they found that the senior BNP leader had amassed wealth worth about Tk 1.67 crore and concealed information on around Tk 91 lakh in his wealth statements.

Nasrin was accused in the case for aiding and abetting his husband in the offence.

The case was filed on December 10 last year with Gulshan Police Station.

FOYSAL CASE
Judge Mohammad Azizul Haque of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court passed the order after receipt of reports on the arrest warrants.

The same court had issued the arrest warrants on June 18 against Foysal and wife Shyama in the case for amassing Tk 7.10 crore illegal wealth and concealing wealth information to the ACC.

On June 16, ACC Assistant Director Mohammad Talebur Rahman, also the IO of the case, submitted the charge sheet against the couple to the CMM Court, showing 34 people as prosecution witnesses.

The IO prayed for issuance of arrest warrants against them and an order to attach their properties, as they remain absconding.

The case was filed against them on December 10 last year with Gulshan Police Station.

In the case statement, the complainant said that Foysal had held back information about property worth Tk 6.94 crore in his wealth statement and had accumulated Tk 7.10 crore wealth beyond his known sources of income.

Foysal’s wife was accused in the case for aiding her husband in amassing illegal wealth.

MILON CASE
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Golam Rabbani passed the order allowing interrogation of detained Milon at jail gate following a petition by ACC Assistant Director Rafiqul Islam, the IO of the graft case.

In the petition, the IO said that he had found involvement of the accused in acquiring wealth beyond his known sources of income. So, he needs to be questioned about his wealth, the IO added.

Milon was arrested in August last year for allegedly violating Emergency Power Rules (EPR) and later he was shown arrested in different cases filed for creating panic on the Dhaka University campus on August 21, 22, and 23 last year.

However, the police later submitted final reports of the cases clearing him of the charges.

Milon was re-arrested from the jail gate on charges of violating EPR after his release in those cases.
