Move to complete forgotten bridges

The government has embarked on a Tk 437.40 crore project to complete 65 bridges that have been lying incomplete for years for want of funds and proper attention of the authorities concerned causing acute public sufferings.The task of completing these bridges, which are 7,563.90 metres in length, will take three years and will cost twice to thrice the amount they would have required if completed in due time, communications ministry sources said.Constructions of a few of these bridges started at the initiatives of local parliamentarians elected since 1990 at the fag end of their governance. BNP grassroots press top leadership for joining elections

The BNP leadership appears to be under growing pressure from its grassroots level leaders to participate in the August 4 polls to city corporations and municipalities.Arch-rival Awami League's (AL) decision to contest the local elections has complicated matters further. Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed yesterday said elections to upazila parishads would be held before general elections and the government will help ensure that the polls are free from the influence of black money and muscle power."The Election Commission has decided to hold upazila elections ahead of the general election. Dhaka College students go for car bashing after accident

Dhaka College students yesterday went on the rampage and set fire to a microbus following a road accident that left one of their fellow students seriously injured.At least 10 vehicles were vandalised during the angry protests.Witnesses said the speeding microbus hit Saiful Islam, a first year student of Biology department, in front of the college while he was crossing the road at around 12:00noon.The locals rushed him to nearby Central Hospital on Green Road and he was later admitted to Pongu Hospital in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.Saiful's legs have been fractured but he was out of danger, hospital sources ... Govt may raise income tax ceiling

The government may bring a few changes in the proposed budget including raising the income tax ceiling and withdrawing tax on the profit of deposit pension schemes.The proposed budget for the fiscal year 2008-09 is likely to be placed before the advisory council today for approval. 21 rescued from Rajshahi border

The Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) on Friday rescued 21 people including women and children while they were being trafficked to India through Charmazdiar border across the Padma in Rajshahi.The border guards, acting on a tip-off, challenged and apprehended the 21 individuals who had gathered on the border on Friday evening.BDR sources quoting one of the rescued women said an unidentified man lured them, claiming to be members of a joint family in Narail and Jessore, with good jobs in India.The man, however, escaped arrest by the time the BDR reached the scene.The rescued are Asma, 27, her daughter Reshma, 5, ...
