The central leaders of BNP intend to keep its dissident leaders out of the loop during their planned tours to the party’s organisational districts in a bid to reorganise the party.

Party insiders said according to a decision of the central leadership, the leaders and former lawmakers who had sided with the dissident faction of the party led by M Saifur Rahman and Maj (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed would not be allowed to participate in the tours.

Rizvi Ahmed, acting office secretary of BNP told The Daily Star yesterday, “The central leaders will initiate district level tours across the country shortly to organise the party.”

The central leaders in the meantime will seek to establish new leadership in the districts, replacing the dissident leaders in the districts, added the party insiders.

In a move seen as the reflection of the central policy meant to ostracise the dissident leaders, BNP’s Joint Secretary General Selima Rahman and Acting Office Secretary Rizvi Ahmed yesterday attended a views exchange meeting with the party’s Barisal (north) committee leaders except three local former lawmakers who are known to be Saifur loyalists.

The Saifur loyalist lawmakers are Shah Abul Hossain, Mosharraf Hossain Mangu and Zahiruddin Swapan.

BNP leaders said as per the directive of Khandaker Delwar Hossain, the secretary general of the party, leaders of the district have already nominated advocate Dulal Hossain as the acting president of the district committee.

The committee in a recent meeting relieved Mangu of the post of the president of the district committee due to his affiliation with the Saifur-led faction.

Asked to comment on the agenda of the views exchange meeting with the district committee, Bilkis Jahan Shirin, a former BNP lawmaker, told The Daily Star that organisational affairs of the party were discussed during the meeting.

A group of central leaders meanwhile are trying to convince local leaders of the party to refrain from participating in local government elections in line with the decision of the party, the party insiders said adding that another group of the central leadership however is against any interference in the matter as the local body elections are not meant to be political.

Central leaders during their probable district tours would discuss the matter with grassroots leaders of the party, said BNP leaders adding that a number of local BNP leaders have already collected nomination forms to take part in the local body polls.

DELWAR MEETS CITY LEADERS
BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain yesterday held a meeting with leaders from Demra, Shyampur and Jatrabari units of BNP at his Nam flat.

Delwar while addressing the leaders said the 1/11 was carried out only to foil the democratic system in the country. “Local and foreign conspirators were involved in it.”

He also said the present government should hand over power to an elected government without further delay as this government has failed to ensure food and security for the citizens.
