The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) launched a special programme yesterday to intercept criminals through putting up 100 checkpoints across the city within minutes on information.

“The new initiative is part of the capacity building and capacity increase programme of the DMP to curb criminal activities by intercepting the criminals,” DMP Commissioner Naim Ahmed told The Daily Star.

About seven hundred police personnel, in cooperation with the police stations and police zones concerned, would man the programme.

The DMP took the initiative after the recent rise in muggings, snatchings, robberies and other criminal activities, sources said.

The DMP commissioner said, “As part of the programme, police forces are required to be ready round the clock to take orders from the Police Control Room. They must set up 100 checkpoints at important spots within 10-15 minutes following orders from the control room.”

On the fist day of the programme, police seized 21 kilograms of cannabis at the checkpoint near Railway Bhaban and 249 gold chains weighing one kilogram at Fulbaria yesterday.

Three gold smugglers and two drug peddlers were arrested at the time.

The deputy commissioner (DC) of Lalbagh Zone told The Daily Star that the gold smugglers were members of a smuggling ring who smuggle in gold ornaments from Singapore.

The arrested–Mohammad Raju Bhuiyan and Abdul Baten of Palash upazila in Narsingdi and Raju’s brother-in-law Zakir Hossain of Narayanganj’s Araihazar upazila–said they usually sold smuggled gold to Tantibazar businessmen in the city.

The drug dealers, identified as Mohammad Samir and Mohammad Yusuf, said they bought the cannabis at Comilla’s Burichang and were on their way to Karwan Bazar to sell it.
