Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina said the caretaker government should give holding parliamentary elections priority one for the sake of transition to democracy and the country’s development rather than holding local body polls.

She said the AL always believes in people’s power. The AL wants development in the country and for this reason none can stop its victory in the elections if people can exercise their franchise freely, US-based American News Agency (ANA) reports quoting her as saying.

She made the remarks during separate views-exchange meetings with Maria Minna, founding chairman of Bangladesh Caucus in Canadian parliament and former immigration affairs minister, and George Smitherman, deputy prime minister of Ontario, and minister for Energy and Development Affairs of Ontario, Canada.

The AL chief demanded the government hand over power to people’s representatives elected in a free, fair and credible election which should be held as soon as possible, US-based news agency News World reports.

The AL chief said Bangladesh could become a mid-level developed country if AL is voted to power.

During the meeting with Smitherman at his office, Smitherman enquired about the situation in Bangladesh. The Canadian leader also wanted to know about Hasina’s medical treatment.

Hasina told him that Canadian investment plays a crucial role in the development of her country. She said Canadian investment has become more important in the energy sector.

Praising Hasina for curbing corruption, Smitherman said the two countries could work together to curb terrorism.

Maria Minna met Hasina at Saima Wazed Putul’s Toronto home where the Canadian politician expressed her concern over the human rights situation in Bangladesh. Maria emphasised the need for holding parliamentary polls immediately and forming people’s government.

She also stressed the need for holding parliamentary elections rather than holding local body polls in Bangladesh.
