Essential prices go up further

Prices of daily essentials including rice, lentils and edible oil shot up further in the capital in the last two days.

However, prices of broiler chicken came down by Tk 10-20 per kg.

Traders claim the price hike of fuel along with incessant rain was behind the price hike of daily commodities. A section of traders are also taking the opportunity of poor monitoring by the government, they allege.

Prices of brand soya bean oil rose by Tk 9-10 per litre as the oil companies re-fixed the prices of different quantities yesterday. A five-litre can of Rupchanda was fixed at Tk 606.5 and five-litre Teer at Tk 594.

However, each five-litre can of different brands was sold at Tk 605 to Tk 615 in retail market yesterday. The price was between Tk 560 and Tk 565 two days ago.

The prices of all varieties of rice have increased by Tk 1 per kg at retail markets.

Coarse rice was selling between Tk 34 and Tk 36 per kg yesterday which was Tk 33-35 two days back. Miniket (fine rice) was sold at Tk 42-43 a kg yesterday, while it was Tk 41-42 two days earlier.

Parija (medium variety) was sold at Tk 37-38 per kg yesterday. It was sold at Tk 36-37 two days ago.

The wholesale prices of all varieties of rice have also increased by Tk 10-20 per maund (37.32 kg) in the city market.

Prices of all varieties of lentils have gone up by Tk 2-5 per kg in the city kitchen markets.

In retail markets, Kangaroo lentils (good quality imported lentils) were sold at Tk 110-115 per kg yesterday. The price was Tk 110 two days ago.

Local lentils were selling at Tk 100-110 per kg yesterday and the price was between Tk 100-105 two days ago.

One kg of lentil imported from Turkey was sold at Tk 92-95; it was between Tk 90-95 two days back, market sources said.

the price of potato saw a fresh hike yesterday. A kg of potato was sold between Tk 16-18 per kg, which was between Tk 16-17 per kg two days ago.

Price of local and Indian onions has increased by Tk 2 per kg. Local onions were selling between Tk 25 and Tk 27 per kg, while Indian variety was sold at Tk 18-22 yesterday.

The prices of vegetables have also shot up by Tk 2-5 per kg.

However, prices of broiler chicken came down by Tk 10-20 per kg. A kg of broiler chicken was selling between Tk 90-100 yesterday. Two days ago the price was Tk 120 per kg.

The price of egg remains stable and it now sells between Tk 78-84 per dozen.
