Robbers yesterday looted about 700 tolas of gold worth over Tk 1.5 crore and Tk 4.07 lakh in cash from a jewellery shop in the capital’s Mirpur.
Sources said a gang of four robbers entered Dewan Jewellers on the first floor of Shah Ali Shopping Complex at Mirpur Section-1 at about 2:00pm and pointed firearms at the three employees of the shop. They threatened to kill the shopkeepers if they screamed for help.
The robbers looted gold ornaments worth over Tk 1.5 crore and Tk 4.07 lakh in cash within minutes and decamped before the neighbouring shopkeepers could sense anything.
The employees of the shop said the robbers put the gold ornaments and the money in three bags and left the scene hurriedly.
Deputy Commissioner of Mirpur Zone Anwar Hossain told The Daily Star, “Police have been investigating the matter. We have already engaged several teams to track down the robbers.”
Police, however, said the robbers had looted only five per cent of the gold ornaments put on display at the shop.
Meanwhile, the shop owners of nine markets in the area kept their outlets shut since 3:00pm protesting the incident.
They demanded immediate recovery of the looted gold and arrest of the robbers.
