Charges have been pressed against Barisal City Corporation (BCC) Mayor Mojibar Rahman Sarwar and Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Mayor Sheikh Tayabur Rahman in two separate cases filed against them in connection with ill-gotten wealth and extortion.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) pressed charges against BCC Mayor and president of district BNP committee Mojibar Rahman Sarwar and his wife Nasima Sarwar in a case filed for amassing wealth worth over Tk 9 crore illegally and giving false wealth information to the commission.

Sub Inspector Golam Rabbani of the Detective Branch of Khulna Metropolitan police (KMP) submitted the charge sheet against KCC Mayor and three others in connection with an extortion case.

BCC MAYOR
ACC Assistant Director Asraful Islam, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, submitted the charge sheet against Sarwar and his wife Nasima to the Barisal Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court showing 19 people as prosecution witnesses, reports our correspondent from Barisal.

In the charge sheet, the IO said Sarwar had submitted his wealth statement to the ACC on 26 July last year stating that he has immovable property worth Tk 4.99 crore and movable property worth Tk 2.58 crore.

But during an investigation it was found that the BNP leader had amassed wealth worth about Tk 9.09 crore illegally and also concealed information about wealth worth Tk 3.89 crore.

KCC MAYOR
Sub Inspector Golam Rabbani of the Detective Branch of Khulna Metropolitan police (KMP) submitted the charge sheet against detained KCC Mayor and three others to the CMM’s court in connection with an extortion case, reports our staff correspondent in Khulna.

The three others chargesheeted accused are Abdul Wadud, Delwar Hossain and Sakhawat Hossain.

The case was filed with Khulna Sadar thana on November 5 last year by Jahangir Hossain of West Baniakhamar as complainant.

The complainant alleged in his FIR that the accused took Tk 1 lakh from him promising to provide him a job in the city corporation.

But they neither provided him with the job nor returned the money.

SI Golam Rabbani, who investigated the case, has named 12 people in the charge sheet as prosecution witnesses.
