Vested interests using the banner of the liberation war are plotting to create a civil war-like situation at a time when people are waiting for transition to democracy through a general election, Awami League leader Amir Hossain Amu yesterday said.

He pointed finger at a meeting of the Jamaat-backed so-called “Jatiya Mutkijoddha Parishad” Friday where Shibir cadres swooped on a liberation war veteran as he demanded punishment to those Jamaat men who had been al-Badr and Peace Committee members during the liberation war.

Amu was speaking at a discussion on Liberation War of Bangladesh: Role of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, organised by Muktijoddha Samonnoy Parishad (MSP) at Cirdap auditorium.

K Nandini Sinhal, first secretary at Indian High Commission in Dhaka, Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, MSP leaders advocate Mohsen Rashid, Morshed Ali, Muhammad Musa, Begum Nurunnahar Mary, Zafar Iqbal Siddiqi, Manoranjan Ghoshal and Mehedi Hassan also spoke at the meeting, presided over by MSP Chairman Abir Ahad.

Amu said the assault on the freedom fighter at the Jamaat-sponsored meeting was a body blow to the independence and liberation war of Bangladesh.

Paying homage to Field Marshal Manekshaw, Amu said, “He heaped mental pressure on the Pakistan army during the war.”

He called on the freedom fighters to unitedly face off the war criminals.

K Nandini Sinhal said, “Manekshaw never claimed victory for India or himself; instead he lauded the brave people and the freedom fighters of Bangladesh for the victory.”

Prof Arefin Siddique said, “We’d gained victory in only nine months, thanks to the plan of the then Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi and the action of Field Marshal Manekshaw.”

He said the interim government must act to try ‘rajakars’ and communal forces at international tribunals for their crimes against humanity during the liberation war.
