Two mayoral candidates in Khulna have accused Jute and Textiles Adviser Md Anwarul Iqbal of violating electoral code of conduct by reopening a privatised jute mill at Khalishpur as it would directly benefit another mayoral candidate.
The adviser should not have reopened the People’s Jute Mills as he had played the key role in forming the mayor panel for Khulna City Corporation (KCC) and BNP leader Moniruzzaman Moni, also a candidate for the upcoming mayoral poll, was made the acting mayor from the panel, they said at separate press conferences yesterday, reports our staff correspondent in Khulna.
Khulna city Awami League (AL) President Talukder Abdul Khaleque, who is nominated by the AL-led 14-party coalition for KCC mayor, and another candidate AL leader advocate Enayet Ali said the adviser’s announcement of reopening of the mill would draw sympathy of voters in the Khulna industrial belt for Moni.
The two also alleged that Moni himself is violating the electoral code of conduct by performing duties as the acting KCC mayor and campaigning as a mayoral candidate at night using the official car.
Moni must quit the office of acting mayor and hand over charge to another person for the sake of a free and fair election, Khaleque and Enayet said.
Meanwhile, Enayet alleged that Khaleque is also violating the code of conduct by using the name of the AL during his campaign.
