BSF intruders gun down 2 BDR men

The Border Security Force of India (BSF) shot dead two Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) soldiers at Raghunathpur border under Shibganj upazila in Chainawabganj early yesterday intruding into Bangladesh territory, sparking off tension at all frontiers around the country.The killings coincided with foreign-secretary level talks between the two neighboring countries in New Delhi, and took place just hours after both sides on Thursday pledged more cooperation in enhancing cross-border trade and security.BDR officials said BSF guards opened fired on their personnel when they challenged the latter for illegally entering about 1,300 yards into Bangladesh territory shortly after Thursday midnight.A group of BSF ... Over half of polling centres in four cities vulnerable

Law enforcement agencies have identified 353 polling centres out of 579 as vulnerable to violence in elections in four city corporations scheduled for August 4, and launched crackdown on criminals working in favour of candidates.Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) and Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) started special drives last night to arrest alleged criminals. Similar operations would begin in two other city corporations within a day or two. Power cut paralyses DMCH as patients bear the brunt

Patients at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) yesterday suffered severely due to power outage for over four hours in two phases.Emergency patients bore the burnt of the situation as no pathological test was conducted during the period.Hospital sources said the power supply remained suspended in the first phase for three and a half hours from 9:00am due to repairing work in the main electricity line of the hospital.Though power supply was ensured in the emergency wards, operation theatres and intensive care units (ICUs) through generators, patients suffered badly as they could not have pathological tests like x-ray, ultrasonogram and CT-scan.During ... Aman may miss target for fertiliser shortage

Short supply of fertilisers is affecting cultivation of Aman rice in northern region of the country creating uncertainty about achieving the production target this season, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials said.Farmers in the 16 northern districts are facing problems due to inadequate supply of urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) and other chemical fertilisers.The government target is to bring around 17.18 lakh hectares of land under Aman cultivation in the region this season for production of about 43.31 lakh tonnes of rice. The foreign ministry condemned the killings of two Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) personnel by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the Chapainawabganj frontier early yesterday."We consider the incident as most serious and condemn the killings of the two BDR personnel," a foreign ministry statement issued last night said, referring to a spokesman of the ministry.It said the BDR authorities will take up the matter with their Indian counterparts. Road mishaps kill 14 in Dhaka, Comilla

At least 14 people were killed in two road accidents in Dhaka and Comilla yesterday.Six people died and 13 others were injured when a human hauler skidded off the road and fell into a ditch after a head-on collision with a passenger bus on Nabinagar-Kaliakoir Road under Ashulia Police Station last night.Of the dead, two were identified as Sourav, 26, and Abdul Barek, 28. The identity of the rest could not be known immediately.
