The Election Commission (EC) will look into the allegations of violating the electoral rules by three mayoral candidates in Rajshahi, Khulna and Barisal.
Sources in the EC Secretariat said the decision follows complaints lodged against the three–Khairuzzaman Liton in Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC), Moniruzzaman Moni in Khulna City Corporation (KCC) and Ebadul Haque Chan in Barisal City Corporation (BCC).
MM Hafizur Rahman, a mayoral candidate in KCC polls, has filed the complaint against acting mayor Moni for flouting the code of conduct in electioneering.
Masudul Haque Vulu, a mayoral hopeful in RCC polls, has filed the complaint against Liton.
Earlier, Liton apologised to the EC after being cautioned against using party office in election campaigns.
Mahbubur Rahman, a constituent in Barisal, has accused Ebadul Haque Chan of submitting incomplete personal information to the EC. According to the complaint, Chan had concealed that he owes money to the government.
EC Secretariat officials prepare to place the matter before the election commissioners in a couple of days.
“The commissioners will decide whether there has really been any breach of electoral rules,” a senior official said.
If a candidate is found guilty, he/she might have to face imprisonment or fine and even lose candidature. If an allegation is proved false, the EC might censure and warn the bringer of complaint.
Meanwhile, Rabiul Islam Minu, a councillor candidate of RCC ward No. 13, has made an allegation against rival contestant Ziaul Haque Tuku of violating the code of conduct.
Nazmul Huda, a voter of BCC ward No. 24, has lodged complaint with the EC against okaying the nomination of Firoz Ahmed, a councillor candidate of the ward.
He claimed Firoz had been sentenced to life imprisonment and detained for 11 months on arrest by the joint forces.
