The National Board of Revenue (NBR) yesterday filed a case against detained former health minister Dr Khondaker Mosharraf Hossain for evading over Tk 63 lakh in income tax from 1995 to 2005.

NBR Deputy Tax Commissioner Muhtasibur Rahman Khan filed the case with the Dhaka Senior Special Judge’s Court against the former lawmaker for committing the offence.

NBR said Mosharraf evaded tax upon his income of Tk 26,953,554 from 1995 to 2005.

Judge Azizul Haque took the charges into cognisance after the hearing and directed the jail authorities to produce Mosharraf before the court on July 30.

In his order, the judge said the charges brought against the accused were primarily proved and he should be brought under trial.

In the complaint, Muhtasibur mentioned that Mosharraf, also the director of Swajan Housing Ltd, evaded a total of Tk 6,323,602 in income tax.

The former lawmaker gave false information about his real income and expenditure to the income tax department, the complainant added.

Mosharraf, a charge-sheeted accused in the Gatco graft case, is facing a number of criminal cases, including one for amassing wealth illegally and giving false wealth information to the commission.

The joint forces arrested Mosharraf from his Banani residence on March 7 last year and seized documents from the house.
