Prices of non-brand edible oil started to come down on both the wholesale and retail markets in the city in the last three days.
Coarse-rice prices also slid on the wholesale market in the same period, but the fall did not see any impact on retail prices till yesterday.
Wholesale prices of non-brand cooking oils dropped by Tk 200-500 per maund in the last ten days. Yesterday a maund of non-brand palm and soya bean oils was selling at Tk 3360-3400 and Tk 4150-4180 respectively. Better quality, but non-brand, palm oil sold for Tk3460-3500.
The retail market saw a fall of Tk 2-8 per litre in coking oil prices in the last three days. Palm oil was selling for Tk 94-100 per litre while non-brand soya bean oil cost Tk 116-118 a litre yesterday.
Recently prices of crude palm oil on the international market came down to $1070-1080 per tonne from $1360 two weeks back, said Fakhrul Alam, country manager of Malaysian Palm Oil Council.
But there have been no change in the prices of branded edible oil on the kitchen markets during this period.
Karwan Bazar retailer Abdul Hannan said a 5-litre jerrycan of Rupchanda was selling at Tk 611 yesterday.
Coarse-rice prices came down Tk 30-40 per maund (37.32 kg) on the wholesale marker in the last three days. Irri was selling at Tk 1170-1180 a maund yesterday, a drop from Tk 1210 three days back.
The price of mid-quality BR-28 rice fell by Tk 40 per maund, now selling at Tk 1290. A maund of Parija also dropped by Tk 20 in the last three days.
The price fall, however, did not impact on the retail market as of yesterday.
Our Chittagong correspondent reports: prices of edible oils marked a sharp fall on the retail market in the port city in the last one week.
Wholesalers said the prices would have come down more had not some importers increased the prices by Tk200-300 per maund.
Prices of palm oil dropped by Tk 6-8 per litre at retail outlets in the last one week.
Retail price of soya bean remained stable at Tk 116 in the same period.
