ACC presses charges against Khaleda’s nephew Tuhin

The Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday pressed charges against detained former premier Khaleda Zia’s nephew Shahrin Islam Tuhin and Awami League (AL) presidium member Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury’s son Shahdab Akbar in separate cases filed for amassing wealth illegally.

Meantime, a Dhaka court issued arrest warrant against Jubo League President Jahangir Kabir Nanak in a case filed for accumulating wealth worth Tk 18 lakh illegally and giving false information in the wealth statement submitted to the commission.

CASE AGAINST TUHIN
ACC Assistant Director Towfiqul Islam, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s (CMM) Court in a case filed for amassing wealth worth Tk 65 lakh illegally and giving false wealth information to the commission.

The IO prayed for issuing arrest warrant against Khaleda’s nephew and former BNP lawmaker Tuhin and the order to attach his properties as he has been absconding since the case was filed.

The IO showed 40 people as prosecution witnesses in the case.

In the charge sheet, he mentioned that Tuhin concealed information about his wealth worth Tk 14,335,964 and amassed wealth worth Tk 65,18,755 illegally.

The ACC filed the case against Tuhin with Gulshan Police Station on December 19 last year on charges of accumulating Tk 2.9 crore illegally and concealing information about his wealth worth Tk 1.43 crore.

CASE AGAINST SAJEDA’S SON
ACC Assistant Director SM Rashedur Reza, also the IO of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the CMM Court against Shahdab in the case filed for concealing information about his assets and amassing wealth illegally.

The IO prayed for issuing arrest warrant against Shahdab and the order to attach his properties. He dropped the name of Shahdab’s wife Shahnaz Khan from the charge sheet as the charges brought against her were not proved.

ACC Assistant Director Khairul Huda filed the case with Ramna Police Station against the couple on February 19 this year for concealing information about assets worth Tk 95.38 lakh and accumulating wealth worth Tk 1.24 crore beyond their known sources of income.

NANAK CASE
Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Azizul Haque took the charges into cognisance and issued the arrest warrant after scrutinising all relevant documents.

ACC Deputy Assistant Director Abul Kashem, the IO of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the Dhaka CMM Court on July 30 showing 16 people as prosecution witnesses.

The IO prayed for issuing arrest warrant against Nanak, and the order to attach his properties as he has been on the run since filing of the case.

ACC filed the case with Ramna Police Station against Nanak on March 25 this year on charges of amassing wealth worth Tk 1,827,109 illegally and concealing information about his wealth worth Tk 1,202,109.
