Retail prices of coarse rice have started coming down in the city markets as the wholesale prices have been sliding for the last five days.

The prices of battery chickens and eggs market a further rise in the kitchen markets.

Traders, however, gave assurance that the prices of daily commodities would not see further hike during the month of Ramadan.

Coarse rice prices came down by Tk 1-2 per kg on the retail markets in the last two days. Irri was selling at Tk 33-34 a kg yesterday, a drop from Tk 35 two days back.

The prices of other rice varieties like BR-28 (medium quality), parija, local swarna and miniket fell by Tk 1 per kg, now selling at Tk 37-44.

In the wholesale markets, the prices of almost all varieties of rice have been falling since last Monday, wholesale market sources said.

The price of Irri came down to Tk 1,140 from Tk 1210 per maund while parija to Tk 1320 from Tk 1370 per maund. Price of Lata rice dropped at Tk 1260 from Tk 1340 and miniket (better quality) at Tk 1540 from Tk 1570. The medium quality miniket also came down to Tk 1450 from Tk 1470 per maund.

Wholesalers said the government decision to start open market sale (OMS) of rice from August 20 and reduction in paddy price in the rural markets have contributed to the fall of the prices of rice.

The prices of battery chickens and eggs registered a sharp rise in the city. The price of battery chickens rose by Tk 10 per kg in the retail markets, jumping to Tk 120-125 per kg yesterday. It was sold at Tk 110-115 a kg a week ago.

The price of eggs also rose by Tk 2 per hali (four pieces). A hali of eggs was sold at Tk 25-26 yesterday, which was Tk 23-24 a week ago.
