Upazila elections from Oct 23 in two phases

The Election Commission (EC) has finally decided to start holding the much-talked-about upazila elections from October 23, braving political parties' strong opposition to holding these polls before the national election planned for December.In the first phase, the EC will hold elections in 200-250 of the 482 upazilas on two different dates, the commission decided at a meeting on Monday.It has also decided to hold election to Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) alongside the upazila polls, EC sources said, adding that the date for DCC polls is yet to be fixed.The schedules for the upazila elections will be declared on September 10.The ... Food price hike pushed 40 lakh into poverty

300 cars requisitioned every day by cops

In the name of public interest, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) continues temporarily requisitioning around 300 private vehicles on a daily basis through a controversial requisition law that the police chief himself terms a "black law".This requisitioning is supposed to be made on the basis of urgent need. But this has become a daily affair as the need for these vehicles has become "permanent".Yet nobody in the government seems to be taking the initiative to fill up the demand of motor vehicles through procurement. Steps to prevent landslides soon

Six areas identified in facing climate change

Delhi to press Dhaka for extradition treaty

Police scrap PIO amid criticism
