The home ministry yesterday directed the law enforcement agencies to check any slide in law and order, and tackle unrest in readymade garment sector with an iron hand.
The directive came at a meeting of the cabinet committee on law and order in the wake of increasing incidents of dacoity, acid throwing and extortion, and unrest in garment sector.
“Take stern actions against those responsible for disrupting law and order, and those instigating unrest from behind-the-scene,” Home Adviser MA Matin asked the top police official, present at the meeting.
On the unrest in garment factories, the meeting asked the law enforcers to keep labour leaders under constant watch so that they cannot incite agitations.
The meeting, also attended by LGRD Adviser Anwarul Iqbal, expressed concern over the persisting unrest in garment sector.
Home Secretary Abdul Karim, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Nur Mohammad, DMP commissioner and director general of Rab were present at the meeting.
“Law enforcers have been warned of growing unrest in garment factories which might take a serious turn during the month of Ramadan,” the IGP said.
Tough actions would be taken against troublemakers in garment factories, he added.
He skirted a reply when asked why actions would be taken against garment workers who are agitating for realising their rights.
Chaired by the home adviser, the meeting noted that cases of loot and rape increased last month compared to that in the previous month.
The meeting asked police to stop extortion in transport sector.
It decided that the government would allow different organisations to hold their elections only after examining intelligence reports on them.
