Surging water of the Jamuna washed away a section of the flood-protection embankment in Sariakandi, Bogra flooding two villages. The flooding destroyed a number of houses displacing 3,000 people who feared that more areas would be inundated.
The flood-affected people have taken shelter in temporary flood shelters while many others are staying under the open sky on highways.
Many of them have become penniless losing their homes and other valuables.
A few lakh people in northern and central parts of the country are still marooned and they lack drinking water, food and fodder for their livestock.
The flood situation improved in many places but waterborne diseases have started to spread where floodwater has receded.
In Manikganj, floodwater is flowing over the road between Aricha and Paturia threatening road communication between the capital and the southern parts of the country.
Water levels of different rivers, except the Padma, have started to fall. The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) yesterday said a number of areas in the central part of the country may be inundated.
Our Bogra correspondent reports: Nearly 120 metre of the flood protection embankment in Sariakandi upazila was washed away and it instantly flooded two villages.
Quoting local union parishad chairman and the upazila administration sources, the report said around 3,000 people became homeless there.
Water Development Board (WDB) officials said many villages in Sherpur and Dhunat upazilas are going to be inundated soon as the water of the Jamuna is getting into the Bangali river through an embankment and increasing its water level. They said the current is so strong that it is not possible for them to repair the embankment now.
Our Faridpur correspondent reports: Around 60,000 people of Charvadrasan, Sadarpur and Sadar upazilas of the district are marooned by the swelling Padma. Crisis of drinking water, food and fodder for livestock continues.
Our Tangail correspondent reports: Over 1 lakh people are marooned in different upazilas of the district. The report said around 47km of Bhuapur-Tarakandi flood control embankment is under serious threat.
Our Munshiganj correspondent reports: Floodwater is flowing over Dhaka-Srinagar road snapping road communication. At least 69 families in Hasail have lost their homes to the Padma.
Our Pabna correspondent reports: 20-25 villages in Bera upazila of Pabna have been flooded during the last few days.
Our Gaibandha correspondent reports: New areas in four upazilas of Gaibandha were submerged by floodwater as water flowed in over flood-control embankments. The district administration said 235 square km area is inundated.
Our Kurigram correspondent quoting district administration sources reports: At least 96,062 people living in 750 square km area have been marooned. At least 18,329 houses were destroyed.
Our Sirajganj correspondent reports: Waterborne diseases are starting to spread in many flood-affected areas.
Our Lalmonirhat correspondent reports: 12,000 people are displaced in Patgram and Hatiabandha upazilas due to flooding.
