The number of highest Grade Point Average (GPA-5) holders in this year’s Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and its equivalent examinations saw a phenomenal progress with 22,045 students securing GPA 5 which is almost 98 percent rise compared to that of the previous year.
Out of the total 22,045 GPA-5 holders 19,108 students obtained GPA-5 under the seven education boards of the HSC examination this year while the total number of GPA holders under the nine education boards was 11,140 last year.
According to the grading system introduced in 2003, the GPA 5 holders, popularly known as “A+” holders, have to obtain marks above 80 percent in each course in the exam.
Among this year’s GPA 5 holders, 13,426 are boys and 8,619 are girls.
Education Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman said the number of GPA-5 achievers is increasing every year, which indicates that the quality of education is improving in the country.
Guardians and teachers are now more sincere about their children’s education and students are also becoming serious and interested in their study, and so the number of GPA-5 achievers is increasing in the country, the adviser added while talking to the reporters.
Of the total GPA 5 holders in HSC examination, a total of 12,972 students secured GPA-5 from Science group while 4,590 students secured GPA 5 from Business studies and 1,546 students from Humanities group.
Dhaka Board swept the top position in the list of highest GPA-5 achievers among the nine education boards for the three consecutive years. The board obtained almost half the GPA-5 holders across the country and it is an crease by 103.6 percent from that of the previous year.
Rajshahi and Jessore ranked the second and third position respectively. The number of GPA-5 holders in Rajshahi is 3,399 while in Jessore 1,764. These two boards saw an 86.06 and 48.11 percent rise respectively.
With a total of 12,70 GPA 5 holders Chittagong Board got a berth in the fourth position with 39.4 percent rise while Comilla grabbed the fifth position with 657 GPA-5 holders.
Barisal and Sylhet boards were placed in the sixth and seventh position where 591 and 425 examinees secured GPA-5 respectively. These two boards also saw a significant rise in the number of GPA holders.
Under the Madrasa Board, 2,886 students achieved GPA-5 while the number was 930 in the last year. The board saw a rise of 210.32 percent in GPA-5 achievers.
Under the Technical Education Board a total of 51 students obtained GPA 5, which is a 920 percent rise from the previous year.
