Aman production in four northern districts may fall 1,33,000 metric tons short of their targets due to floods and waterlogging, officials said.
In Kurigram, floods damaged over 28,779 hectares of Aman paddies, which may bring down the projected yield by 96,660 tonnes, causing a loss of Tk 186 crore, Md Mohsin Ali, deputy director for the agriculture extension department in the district, said.
The district had a target of 2,71,473 tonnes in Aman production this year, he said.
The department in Bogra plans to promote Rabi crops like lentil and maize to make up for the loss in Aman production there, its deputy director for Bogra Rostam Ali said.
At least 6,000 hectares of cultivated land have gone under water in Bogra’s four upazilas. The likely production loss of 10,200 tonnes will translate into Tk 30 crore.
At least 15,058 hectares of Aman fields are still under water in Gaibandha. This may cause a loss of about 24,000 tonnes in production, the department’s deputy director for the district Mizanur Rahman Amin said.
He said their preliminary report puts the loss at Tk 72 crore.
More than 1,000 hectares of Aman paddies have been waterlogged in Sirajganj, destroying the prospect of about 2,500 tonnes of rice.
Khandaker Hasibur Rahman, the agriculture extension department’s deputy director in the district, estimated the loss at Tk 7.50 crore.
