16 killed in attack on US embassy in Yemen

Islamist militants attacked the US embassy in the Yemeni capital Sanaa with a car bomb and rockets yesterday, leaving 16 people dead, in the second strike on the high-security compound in six months.The toll included six Yemeni soldiers, six attackers and four civilians, including an Indian, the interior ministry said.Meanwhile, the White House on Wednesday denounced an Islamist militant attack on the US embassy in Yemen's capital Sanaa and offered condolences to the relatives of Yemenis killed in the strike."The United States condemns this attack," said spokesman Gordon Johndroe. Govt mulling policy summit of politicians

The caretaker government will organise a policy summit with the top political leaders of the country on three cardinal issues--investment growth, administrative reforms and education.In the run-up to the December polls, the proposed summit will take place in the later part of November.Commerce Advisor Hossain Zillur Rahman yesterday unveiled the plan of the caretaker government.Following the 1/11 changeover amid a political crisis over election issues, the present caretaker government has done massive reforms that will need ratification.He, however, said the government will not provide any guideline on the issues.Rather, the government will expect political parties to share their ...
