Over 10 fishermen went missing as three more trawlers sank in the turbulent sea on Wednesday night amid the deep depression that crossed Orissa coast early yesterday.
Flood control embankments in Bagerhat, Satkhira, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Barguna and Bhola were washed by tidal surge during high tides. Around 50 villages, 50 shoals and also the low-lying areas of these districts have been inundated, leaving thousands of people marooned.
Standing Aman crops at the affected villages have been damaged while about 200 shrimp enclosures washed away.
Water vessels plying 76 routes remained suspended as the rivers became choppy due to influence of the depression, our correspondents reported. Maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Mongla have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal number three.
Earlier On Tuesday, more than 100 fishermen reportedly went missing as 25 trawlers capsized in rough waters caused by the depression over the North Bay on Monday. Besides, the low-lying areas in the coastal districts were submerged due to tidal surge.
Our staff correspondent from Khulna reported that high tide on the river Baleshwar has inundated at least ten villages under Sharankhola upazila of Bagerhat, leaving several hundred people marooned.
Standing Aman crops at the affected villages have been damaged and while about 200 shrimp enclosures washed away.
The situation is alarming, as surging water of the river Baleshwar has inundated vast areas of the upazila, paralysing normal life of the people, said Chairman of Southkhali Union Parishad Anwar Hossain Panchayet.
Our Satkhira correspondent reported that 200 feet embankment at Khalshibunia and a sluice gate have been washed away by high tide on the river, leaving over 45,000 people marooned.
The affected people are facing acute scarcity of pure drinking water and food.
Our Patuakhali correspondent reports: The vast areas of Patuakhali, including the district headquarters, have been submerged. The authorities suspended the ferry services on Patuakhali -Kuakata road as the pontoons went under water. Breaches in the flood control embankment have been developed at 10 points.
Road communications on Barisal-Swarupkati, Barisal-Pirjopur, Barisal-Kuakata routes have been disrupted as the roads and ferry ghats have gone under water, according to our Barisal correspondent.
