Former minister and Awami League (AL) Presidium member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim was released on bail yesterday from the prison cell of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) hospital.

Getting out of the prison cell around 12:30pm, Selim claimed himself innocent of all charges against him and demanded permanent release of AL President Sheikh Hasina. He also demanded withdrawal of the state of emergency before the parliament election.

Later, he went to the Banani graveyard and offered fateha seeking peace for the departed souls of the victims of the August 15, 1975 massacre.

The joint forces arrested Selim on May 28 last year at his Banani residence in connection with an extortion case filed by businessman Azam J Chowdhury with Gulshan police. Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana are co-accused in the case.

Selim, who was sued in another corruption case, got bail in both the cases.

Jail officials said they received the papers regarding his release on Sunday.

Several hundred leaders and activists of the AL, who had been waiting in front of the BSMMU prison cell, welcomed Selim.
