The High Court (HC) will deliver an order today on a bail petition of Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, now abroad on parole, in an extortion case filed by businessman Noor Ali.

After completing the hearing on the bail petition, an HC bench of Justice Sheikh Rezowan Ali and Justice Md Rais Uddin on September 24 fixed September 29 (today) for passing the order on the petition.

Meanwhile, two separate petitions will be submitted to the HC today for bail in favour of Sheikh Hasina in the Niko and barge-mounted power plant corruption cases filed by the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC).

Hasina’s counsel barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh on Saturday told The Daily Star that he would submit the bail petitions to the vacation bench of the HC comprising Justice Md Anwarul Haque and Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury on Monday (today).

On September 23 an HC bench comprising Justice AKM Fazlur Rahman and Justice Sheikh Abdul Awal sent back the same bail petitions since the bench did not have the jurisdiction to hear the petitions filed on September 22.

Earlier on July 7 the HC stayed for two months all proceedings against Hasina in connection with the two cases and issued separate rules on the government and the ACC to explain why the cases against her should not be quashed.

Noor Ali, managing director of Unique Group of Companies, filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station on June 13 last year, accusing Hasina and her two relatives of extorting Tk 5 crore for mediating between the Power Development Board and his firm for a power plant deal back in 1997.

The government on July 16 last year brought the case under the Emergency Power Rules (EPR) and a magistrate’s court ordered on July 29 that Hasina be shown arrested in the case.
