36 die in accidents during holidays

At least 36 people including a Rab member were killed and about 200 others injured in road and launch accidents across the country in the last five days.

Six people were killed in the capital and two others in Narayanganj and Mymensingh in separate road accidents.

Five of the deceased were identified as Siddik Khan, 28, Mizanur Rahman, 35, Rubel, 30, and Ekhlas, 35, of Haluaghat in Mymensingh and Harihar, 40, of Rupganj in Narayanganj.

Autopsies were conducted on seven of the victims at the Dhaka Medical College morgue and the other at the Mitford Hospital.

Of the victims, Siddik, Mizanur and Rubel were killed in road mishaps at Jatrabari, Motijheel and Shahbagh in the capital.

Our Kushtia correspondent reports: Four people including a woman were killed and two others injured in road accidents in Meherpur and Kushtia on the Eid day and yesterday.

Police said a truck hit a rickshaw van carrying four people on Houspur-Madna road at Bheramara upazila at about 11:00am leaving Tura Khatun, 32 and Sazzad Hossain, 40, dead on the spot.

Injured Asma, 33 and Sihab, 43 were admitted to Kushtia General Hospital.

Police said Selim, 22, and his nephew Hridoy, 12, were killed when a truck hit their bicycle on Baliapara-Rajnipur highway at Bamundi bazar in Meherpur at about 10:30am.

Our Dinajpur correspondent reports: A Rab member was killed and five others were injured as a Rab pick-up van skidded off the road on Panchagarh-Thakurgaon highway at Khoshbazar on Wednesday.

The dead was identified as habildar Mohammad Asaduzzaman, 40, of Boroipura village in Narsingdi.

Quoting witnesses, Rab and police said a Dinajpur-bound Rab-5 pickup van from Panchagarh carrying 12 Rab members skidded off the road as one of the front tyres of the vehicle burst leaving Asaduzzaman dead and five others injured.

The injured are sub-inspector (SI) Salim Reza and lance nayek Mazedur Rahman, SI Hafizur Rahman, SI Rabindra Nath and Babul Azad.

Reza and Mazedur were sent to Dhaka by a helicopter after the accident. They have been receiving treatment at the Combined Military Hospital.

The others were admitted to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH).

Meanwhile, a person was killed at Parbatipur in Dinajpur when a vehicle collided with a bus on Poilytola bridge on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Nazmul Haque.

Our Pabna correspondent reports: Two persons were killed in separate road accidents at Bonogram village and Pabna town on Wednesday on Dhaka-Pabna highway.

The dead are Mohammad Badsha, 7, of Bonogram village and Fazlul Haque, 25, of the same village.

Our correspondent in Chapainawabganj reports: A man was killed and 25 others were injured as a Chapainawabganj-bound bus from Nachole collided head-on with a pick-up van at Zamtala on the Chapainawabganj-Naogaon road on Friday morning.

The dead was identified as Nesar Ali Liton,35, son of Riaz Ali in Chapainawabganj.

The injured were rushed to the Chapainawabganj Hospital. And then, the critically injured were shifted to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital.

BSS reports: Two persons, including an Indian citizen, were killed and 10 others injured in a road accident on the Jessore-Magura highway at Panchbaria on October 1.

The deceased are RK Bhoro, son of Bishnupada Bhoro of Hoogli district in West Bengal and Parimal Sarkar of Manikganj.

Police said a night coach of Greenline Paribahan fell into a roadside ditch after its driver lost control over the vehicle leaving two persons dead on the spot and 10 others injured.

Our Manikganj correspondent adds: Two people were killed in separate road accidents on the Dhaka-Aricha highway in Manikganj on the Eid day and Saturday.

The dead are Kader and Wajuddin, 70.

News agency UNB reports: Three people were killed and 27 others wounded in four road accidents in Sirajganj on Saturday.

Police said a bus hit a tempo near Boalia Bazar on Bogra-Nagarbari highway at about 8:00am, killing footballer Rabiul, 25, of Monohara village on the spot and injuring at least 16 others.

In another accident, Abdus Salam was killed and five people were injured when a Bogra-bound bus hit a rickshaw van on Jamuna Bridge at 12:00noon.

An elderly physician Dr Maidan Ali was killed when a motorcycle hit him at Fakirtola Bazar at about 4:00pm.

Besides, six people were injured when a private car collided with a pickup van at Naimori on Friday night.

Another UNB report said: Five people were injured in a road accident at Jagannathdighi in Comilla on Friday.

The injured are deputy secretary of LGRD ministry M Habibul Kabir Chowdhury, sugar and food industry corporation’s former chairman Mofazzel Ahmed, his wife Shirin Ahmed, daughter Faria Ahmed and car driver Abdul Halim.

Another UNB report said: Tariqul Islam, a student of PC College in Bagerhat, was killed when a bus hit his bicycle at Vaijora village on Parerhat road of Pirojpur on Friday.

Another UNB report from Habiganj adds: Two people including a minor girl were killed and 10 others injured in a road mishap at Pashchim Bulla in Lakhai upazila.

Our Sylhet correspondent adds: Two brothers — Islail Uddin, 30, and Zamil Ahmed, 25, — were killed on Sylhet-Zakiganj road when a CNG auto-rickshaw collided head-on with a truck yesterday.

Our Barisal correspondent reports: Tonny, 8, daughter of rickshaw puller Zakir Hossain of Babuganj upazila in Barisal succumbed to her injures at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital yesterday.

She was seriously injured after a tempo hit her on Barisal-Dhaka highway while she was crossing the road yesterday.

Our Chandpur correspondent reports: A man and his son were killed at Upalota in Shahrasti on Comilla-Shahrasti road when an oil tanker hit their motorbike on September 30.

Our correspondent from Satkhira reports: A man was killed and five others were injured in a road accident at Nalta in Kaliganj upazila yesterday. The dead was identified as Arif Hossain, 25.

A correspondent in Nokhali said: Two children were killed and 35 others injured in three road accidents in the district on Thursday and Friday.

Rabiul, 4, and Abdul, 6, were killed when a truck ran over them at Shaktola on Sonaimuri-Chatkhil road on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, 35 people were injured when a bus fell into a roadside ditch at Senbagh on Friday.

Bangladesh Football Federation vice-president Badal Roy was injured when a bus hit his microbus at Chandura on the outskirts of Dhaka on October 2.

Our correspondent in Patuakhali reports: A woman was killed and 50 others were injured as two launches collided in Char Goradi canal on September 30.

The identity of the deceased could not be known. A local fisherman found the body while fishing in the canal the next day.

Patuakhali Police Super Ashrafur Rahman said although there were reports that at least 10 people were missing, they found that only a boy had been missing after the incident.

Dhaka-bound launch Red Sun-5 hit Patuakhali-bound launch Manik-5 from Dhaka in Char Goradi canal of Dumki upazila at about 3:30 pm.

Some passengers of Manik-5 jumped from the launch in fear.
