Khaleda charged with Barapukuria graft

The Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday finally submitted a charge sheet against former premier Khaleda Zia and 15 others, including 10 former ministers, in Barapukuria coalmine graft case.ACC Deputy Director Abul Kashem Fakir, who had reinvestigated the case taking over from ACC Deputy Director Monirul Huq, submitted the charge sheet to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka, showing 34 people as prosecution witnesses.The accused former ministers of BNP are M Saifur Rahman, Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, M Shamsul Islam, MK Anwar, Barrister Aminul Haque, Altaf Hossain Choudhury, and AKM Mosharraf Hossain,Former Jamaat ministers Ali ... Refrain from harassing Hasina till Oct 20

The High Court (HC) yesterday directed the government not to harass or arrest Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina at home or abroad till October 20 in the Niko and barge-mounted power plant graft cases.It however did not grant her bail in the cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).The same day the government extended by a month Hasina's parole that was to expire today.Meanwhile, her lawyers yesterday filed an appeal with the Supreme Court against an HC order refusing her bail in the extortion case filed by businessman Noor Ali. Barapukuria coal export proposal shelved

Authorities have shelved a proposal to export 200,000 tonnes of high quality and expensive coal by the Barapukuria Coal Mine Company Ltd (BCMCL) and asked it to go for local market sale first.Sources say frustrated by a lack of interest in local buyers, who prefer cheaper but environmentally hazardous coal from India, BCMCL sought permission from its board to export the coal.Given the international coal market scenario where price of Barapukuria standard coal exceeded $200 a tonne, BCMCL thought it could secure up to $170 a tonne at the mine site from international buyers.This expected price is a sharp contrast ... Extortionists storm Karwan Bazar hotel

Six people including three hotel staff were injured yesterday as extortionists opened fire on them at a hotel in the capital's Karwan Bazar area.Police said a gang of 10 to 12 criminals stormed Hotel Western Garden International (Residential) at about 11:25 am and sprayed bullets indiscriminately leaving three hotel employees and three pedestrians injured.The wounded are assistant manager of the hotel Abul Hossen, 40, hotel boy Faruq, 26, security guard Babul, 45, and garment factory workers Alam, 25, Shahidul Islam, 32 and Sumon, 25.Abul Hossen said the criminals shot him at the cash counter on the 2nd floor of the ... Cops struggle with VIP protection

The police department during the rule of this caretaker government has been providing protection to twice the number of VIPs than it was during the rule of the last elected government.Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has to arrange for police pickup trucks for the VIPs' protection even though the VIPs' departments are supposed to provide the vehicles.The DMP itself lacks pickup trucks and manpower. It has to provide these vehicles depriving law enforcers who need them for policing. Patients who had to seek treatment at the public hospitals in the city over the past few days suffered as medical services were severely disrupted during the Eid vacation.Patients in most of the public hospitals in the capital city complained that the presence of doctors in the different wards of the hospitals was very low.Also, since the availability of doctors at most of the smaller clinics and hospitals across the city was virtually nil, Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) had to bear the brunt of the pressure of patients thronging there.DMCH experienced the same crowd of patients ... BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will start running party activities from her new office at Gulshan-2 in two to three days.Work is going on for renovating house-6 on road-86 in Gulshan-2, which party insiders said the BNP chief herself selected as her office. Cadbury chocolate put to test

Alongside testing infant milk formula for tracing of melamine, the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) has collected samples of Cadbury chocolate whether they are tainted with melamine.Following the reports of the presence of melamine in the Cadbury chocolates in Hong Kong different countries have started recalling this product from their market, which has made the government worried over the issue.As the process of testing melamine in baby milk formula and chocolate is not the same, it will take some more time to test melamine presence in chocolates, BSTI authorities said adding that it might start examining the Cadbury chocolates ...
