Foreign Adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury has said the United Nations (UN) may send election observation mission to Bangladesh during the forthcoming parliamentary elections even if the polls take place under the state of emergency.
“The UN will send its officials to observe the elections scheduled for December 18,” he told reporters after a meeting with UN Resident Coordinator in Dhaka Renata Lok Dessalian at the foreign ministry yesterday.
Renata also told reporters that she discussed the possibility of sending UN election observers to Bangladesh.
Asked whether the elections will be acceptable under the state of emergency, she said the main matter is to ensure an atmosphere where people can vote freely and the political parties can campaign without any interruptions.
She said the recently held city corporation and municipality elections under the state of emergency were peaceful.
“I hope the government will devise a methodology whereby people can vote freely without intimidation and the political parities can also campaign freely,” she told the reporters.
Apart from the election issue, Renata, also the resident representative of UNDP, discussed with the foreign adviser the forthcoming visit of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to Bangladesh. He is expected to visit Bangladesh early November.
The foreign adviser termed the UN chief’s planned visit a “landmark event” in the relations between the UN and Bangladesh.
