Jatiya Party (JP) yesterday decided to bring amendments to its constitution in order to register with the Election Commission (EC) to be able to participate in the upcoming parliamentary election.

JP Chairman HM Ershad yesterday told reporters that JP would participate in the election as part of the grand electoral alliance once Sheikh Hasina returns to the country.

The JP chairman also told reporters that his party would get registered by the deadline of October 15 set by the government. He also informed that JP would take part in the upcoming upazila election and has already selected its candidates for the poll.

The JP presidium committee emergency meeting approved the proposal bringing in the amendment in its constitution. The meeting was held at JP’s Banani office to discuss issues concerning party registration, constitution amendment, and election manifesto.

The proposed amendment will be finalised in the extended meeting of the party scheduled for October 12.

The proposed amendments include the following provisions; an individual cannot be chairman or secretary general of the party for more than two tenures after its registration with the EC, that the central council of the party would be held every three years instead of the existing two years’ term, that the absolute power of the chairman is curtailed.

The amendment also includes bringing in transparency in the party’s expenditure by disclosing sources of income.

The meeting decided to keep its six front organisations and increase the number of members in its existing district, upazila and union committees.

A four-member sub-committee was also formed at the meeting with Kazi Zafar Ahmed as its convener to formulate its election manifesto. Other members of the committee are acting chairman Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud, GM Qader and ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader.

Rowshan Ershad, DR TIM Fazle Rabbi Chowdhury, Golam Mohammad Qader, Sayed Abu Hossain Babla, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Golam Habib Dulal and Mashiur Rahman Ranga were present at the meeting.
