Jatiya Party (JP-Ershad) acting chairman Anisul Islam Mahmud has called for scrapping the caretaker government system saying it is the duty of a political government to accomplish the ‘biggest political task’ like holding parliamentary election.

“I think, caretaker government system should be repealed. The system means politicians are unable to perform the biggest political task like holding general election. It is a shame for politicians,” Anisul said an exclusive interview with The Daily Star.

He said confusion about holding of the next parliamentary election has been created due to lack of the present government’s firm stand in this regard, and complications concerning re-demarcation of parliamentary constituencies.

Stressing that election must be held on December 18, Anisul asked the government and the Election Commission to resolve the issue of re-demarcation.

The JP leader said the state of emergency should continue in order to ensure voters’ safety during the election. He however viewed that all the election-related restrictions should be relaxed.

Referring to 1/11(promulgation of the state of emergency), he said it proved that a corrupt government could not run the country properly. He hoped that ‘lessons’ from 1/11 would change the political culture in the country.

He admitted that there was very limited corruption in some sectors during the eight-year rule of his party. But corruption during the BNP-Jamaat alliance rule broke previous records, he alleged.

The acting JP chairman said that many well-intended moves of the caretaker government failed due to its lack of experience.

On the much-talked-about ‘minus two’ concept, he said,

“Theory of minus two or three is nothing new in political history of the country.”

Asked about his post of acting JP chairman, Anisul said it is not in conflict with the party constitution. The post of party chairman is also there, he added.
