BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain yesterday said the four-party alliance would not participate in any stage-managed election designed to form a ‘rubber stamp parliament and a puppet government.’
“We want to take part in a free, fair and credible election and will accept the election result,” he said at a meeting in the city’s Diploma Engineers’ Institute to press home the four-party’s demand to release their three top leaders.
“Those who will win in that election will form the government and we will sit on the opposition bench if we lose,” Delwar said, adding that they however will not accept any staged election.
Meanwhile, the three leaders — M Saifur Rahman of BNP and Matiur Rahman Nizami and Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojahid of Jamaat-e-Islami — were granted bail by the High Court yesterday in Barapukuria coalmine graft case. They were sent to jail on November 10.
Delwar blamed the government for favouring a certain political group and disfavouring the four-party alliance.
He reiterated the alliance’s demand for creating a level playing field and lifting of emergency without any delay.
“We want to play in such a field where the referee will act neutrally and the field will be even,” Delwar said.
Speaking at the meeting, Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Muhammad Kamaruzzaman demanded the government to take actions against the policemen who were responsible for Tuesday’s attack on Jamaat leaders and workers in front of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
“We want to contest the elections,” the Jamaat leader said, adding that they will go for movement if they are barred from taking part in the polls.
Kamaruzzaman also demanded that the Election Commission register all the Islamist parties that have applied to it.
Bangladesh Jatiya Party Secretary General Shamim Al Mamun vowed to take actions against those police officials who have ‘tortured’ four-party leaders and activists.
He also asked the alliance leaders to make list of the police officials who are ‘disfavouring and torturing’ the alliance leaders.
Abdul Latif Nezami, secretary general of a faction of Islami Oikkya Jote and Muhammad Ishak, Ameer of Khelafat Majlish, among others, addressed the meeting.
