The nomination papers of some candidates including a few former lawmakers of both the major electoral alliances were cancelled yesterday, the last day of scrutiny of nomination papers.

Returning officers (RO) cancelled nominations of BNP leaders Mirza Abbas and his wife Afroza Abbas, Amanullah Aman and his wife Sabera Aman, Sadeque Hossain Khoka, MA Hashem, and Shahabuddin Chowdhury, AL candidates Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Habibur Rahman, Khorshed Alam Sujon and M Idris Ali, JP leaders Engineer Abdul Jabbar and Mujibur Rahman.

Election Commission sources said 557 nomination papers have been cancelled in various constituencies in 64 districts.

Of the 203 nominations filed for 15 constituencies in Dhaka city, 55 had been cancelled, Aziz Khan, divisional commissioner and RO, Dhaka Division, told reporters at his office.

Of those, the nomination papers of 14 candidates were cancelled for defaulting on loans.

The nominations of BNP’s reformist leader ZA Khan and former lawmaker Abdus Salam Pintu were also cancelled.

The nomination paper of Air Vice Marshal (retd) AK Khandaker, Sector Commanders’ Forum chief and AL nominee for Pabna-2 constituency, was cancelled for defaulting on loans, reports our Pabna Correspondent.

The RO office in Pabna said the IFIC Bank claimed that he defaulted on bank loan of Tk 14 crore. AK Khandaker, deputy commander-in-chief of the liberation war, took the loan from the bank when he was the chief of ‘Air Parabat’, sources said.

The nomination paper of Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad (Habiganj-3) was declared invalid as another aspirant filed nomination as a JP candidate for the same constituency, reports our correspondent from Habiganj.

The nomination of journalist Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, who filed nomination for Feni-1 as an AL candidate, was cancelled for defaulting on loans. The RO also cancelled nominations of eight candidates in different constituencies in Feni, reports our Feni Correspondent.

In Bhola, the nomination paper of BNP leader Hafiz Ibrahim, who filed nomination for Bhola-2 as an independent candidate, was cancelled on Wednesday as he was convicted in corruption cases. The RO also cancelled the nominations of four other candidates including Siddiqur Rahman Manna, assistant personal secretary of Dhaka city Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, reports our correspondent from Bhola.

The nomination papers of former BNP lawmakers Muhammad Gias Uddin (Narayanganj-4) and Ataur Rahman Khan Angur (Narayanganj-2) were cancelled for defaulting on bank loans and faulty information in the paper.

The candidates whose nomination papers were cancelled include former BNP lawmaker Wadud Bhuiyan (Khagrachhari), former AL lawmaker Kazi Zafarullah (Faridpur-1) and his brother Kazi Ekramullah (Faridpur-4), AL candidate Sirajul Islam (Faridpur-1), BNP candidate KM Jahangir (Faridpur-2), AL candidate Mohammad Ali (Noakhali-6), former lawmaker and AL candidate Maj Gen (retd) Abdus Salam (Mymensingh-9), BNP candidate AB Siddique (Mymensing10), BNP candidates Ekhlak Hossain (Rajshahi-1) and Tofazzel Hossain (Rajshahi-4), wife of former BNP lawmaker Nadim Mostofa’s wife Nurunnahar Parul (Rasjshai), ex-BNP lawmaker Shah Mohammad Abul Hossian (Barisal-3), BNP candidate Rafikul Islam Zamal (Jhalakati-1), BNP leader Sharif Khasruzzaman (Narail-2), AL leader Mortaza Rashidi Dara (Khulna-4), Proshika Chief Dr Quazi Faruque (Dhaka-16), AL candidate of Abdul Hakim (Comilla-8), former state minister for defense ministry and AL candidate M Idris Ali’s (Munshiganj-3), advocate Mujibur Rahman (Munshiganj-3), AL leader Habibur Rahman (Pirojpur-2), former AL lawmaker ASM Firoz (Patuakhali-2), AL-led alliance candidate Golam Habib Dulal (Kurigram-4), and BNP leader Dipen Dewan (Rangamati).
