Mufti Fazlul Haque Amini, chairman of Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ), is dependent on donations from well-wishers for his election expenditure.

Among others, two men living in the Middle East are contributing to his expenditure fund.

In his wealth statement submitted to the Election Commission (EC), Amini has disclosed that he would be spending a total of Tk 9 lakh in the upcoming polls, the bulk of which, Tk 7 lakh, would be provided by others.

He would be spending Tk 2 lakh earned as gifts (hadia) by attending milad mahfils and giving sermons throughout the year. His son-in-laws Jubayer and Jasimuddin have donated him Tk 1 lakh each and Amini’s brother Anisur Rahman has provided him with Tk 2 lakh.

Two other people, Ifazuddin from Saudi Arabia and Mahfudul Haq from Qatar, have provided him with Tk 2 lakh and Tk 1 lakh respectively.

Amini, who is contesting the December 20 parliamentary poll from Brahmanbaria-2 seat, is spending a huge sum for the poll although he is not a rich person.

According to the affidavit accompanying his nomination paper, Amini earns only Tk 5.34 lakh annually. The largest chunk of this comes from house rent.

The second source of his income is ‘hadia’ which he earns by attending milad mahfils and giving sermons. He also earns Tk 1.40 lakh from teaching.

Amini has movable property worth about Tk 3.5 lakh; Tk 2 lakh in cash, electronic goods worth Tk 1.35 lakh — which he got as hadia — and furniture worth Tk 25,000.

In immovable property, he owns uncultivated land worth Tk 1 lakh and a house worth Tk 33.18 lakh. Alongside this, he also has liabilities in the form of a house loan of Tk 15.78 lakh and a personal loan of Tk 1.59 lakh from Ifazuddin who lives in Saudi Arabia.

The IOJ chairman at present has three criminal cases pending against him.
