BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday pledged to build a “digital Bangladesh” quicker than the Awami League (AL).
Addressing an election rally in Comilla, she termed the AL dream of “digital Bangladesh by 2021″ late because her party has “already steered the country’s course towards that goal”.
“It will take Awami League till 2021 to establish a digital Bangladesh but we will be able to do it sooner,” the BNP chief said at the Comilla Town Hall ground during her December 29 parliamentary polls campaign for the four-party alliance.
Khaleda said those who believe in the politics of violence cannot dream of a “digital Bangladesh”.
“They deliver sweet words before assuming power but forget their pledges when they assume power,” she said, adding, “During our rule, we were connected to the submarine cable and we established a separate ministry for the development of information technology.”
The BNP chairperson alleged that AL is the “other name of destruction” and the nation does not expect anything positive from them “who do not hesitate to kill people in the name of ‘logi-boitha’ movement”.
She accused the AL of being “blind” towards the development “everywhere” done by the BNP, “the most popular political platform in the country”.
“With only a few days to go before the national elections, conspiracies are still being hatched to foil it,” she said. “Everyone has to keep vigil so that the elections cannot be foiled…If the elections are not held, it will cause immense damage to the nation.”
She came down heavily on the AL saying there were famines, lack of freedom of the press during its tenure while there was an “autocratic” one-party system.
“We introduced the multi-party democracy and ensured freedom of the press and that is why the country has so many journalists and media,” she added.
She said the BNP became popular by dint of its services and it won “four of the last five general elections”.
“We formed the Anti-Corruption Commission but it is now torturing innocent people in the name of anti-corruption drive,” Khaleda said, adding that only an elected government can curb corruption.
Leaving her cantonment home around 11:45pm, Khaleda’s motorcade reached Comilla around 2:15pm. She had returned to the capital from Sylhet at 3:30am Monday.
Khaleda was to stay in Feni Circuit House last night and continue campaigning the next day.
