Vice-Principal Abdus Shahid, Awami League (AL) lawmaker of Moulvibazar-4 constituency, has been tapped to serve as the chief whip in the newly constituted parliament.
Prime Minister and Leader of the House Sheikh Hasina has picked him for the post.
On the other hand, Advocate Abdul Hamid, former speaker, is going to be elected as the speaker of the ninth parliament since the policymakers of the ruling AL are actively considering him as party nominee for the post, sources in the AL said.
Hamid, who was deputy leader of the opposition in the previous parliament, is expected to be elected speaker in the inaugural session of the ninth parliament on January 25.
Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) was learnt to have sent Shahid’s name yesterday morning to Bangabhaban, the office-cum-residence of President Iajuddin Ahmed, to assign him to the post of chief whip.
Besides, AL lawmakers Nur-e-Alam Chowdhury Liton, ASM Firoz, Mujibul Haque, Motahar Hossain, Sheikh Abdul Wahab and Segupta Yasmin are going to be appointed as whips of the new parliament, sources said.
As per the recommendation of the prime minister, the president will confirm their appointment.
Contacted by The Daily Star last night, Abdus Shahid, who was the chief whip of the opposition bench in the immediate past parliament, confirmed the information.
Asked about his reaction to the new appointment, Abdus Shahid said he would leave no stone unturned to make the parliament effective.
On their appointments, they will start working in their offices in parliament building to complete all sorts of preparations before the ninth parliament goes into session on January 25.
None of the lawmakers elected from components of AL-led grand alliance was picked for the post of whip.
