At least three people were killed and sixty-five others injured in post upazila polls violence across the country yesterday.
Our Faridpur correspondent reports: Awami League (AL) activist Akkas Matubbar, 50, of Patpasha village at Saltha upazila in Faridpur was beaten to death by rivals from within the party.
Witnesses said at around 7.00am when Akkas was going to his agriculture field, a group of supporters of rebel AL candidate Imamul Hossain defeated in the just-concluded upazila polls attacked him with lethal weapons leaving him dead on the spot and ten others injured.
Akkas was a supporter of AL candidate Delwar Hossain who won the election.
Abdur Rahman, 75, uncle of Akkas said, as Akkas worked for Delwar Hossain in the election supporters of Imamul Hossain killed him.
During the attack about two hundred activists of both the feuding groups clashed with each other, locals said.
Following the incident police arrested four people from the spot while police super Kushum Dewan along with ASP Imamur Rashid and Rab officials visited the spot.
The arrestees are Awal, 40, Akram, 24, Razzak, 40, and Pachu, 55. The body was sent to Faridpur Medical College Hospital morgue.
Our Narail correspondent reports: BNP activist Idris Molla, 45, son of Nabi Mollah of Baka village in Lohagara upazila of the district was killed and fifteen others sustained injuries while AL adherents launched an attack on them yesterday.
Injured Mizanur Rahman, 34, Mirza Mollah and Selim Hossain, 50 were admitted to Lohagara Upazila Health Complex.
Our B’ baria correspondent adds: AL man Oli Mia of Purba Bagh at Nasirnagar upazila was slain yesterday by the followers of Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) candidate Ahsanul Huq as a sequel to a bickering at Purba Bagh Government Primary school voting centre on the election day on January 22.
Witnesses said after the altercation, as Oli Mia, an activist of defeated AL-backed candidate Golam Nur, was leaving the polling centre in the afternoon supporters of Ahsanul Huq swooped on him from behind leaving him critically injured.
Oli Mia was rushed to B’baria Sadar Hospital and later he was referred to DMCH, police said on the way to DMCH early yesterday he succumbed to his injuries.
While filing the report preparation was on to file a case in connection with the murder.
Our Sylhet correspondent reports: At least forty people were injured in post-poll violence yesterday in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts.
As a sequel to a row on the election day supporters of BNP’s Ponki Khan and AL candidate Muhibur Rahman locked in a clash with firearms yesterday afternoon leaving twenty five people injured.
Of the injured eight sustained bullet injuries at Biswanath upazila.
Police later recovered a SBBL gun from the house of upazila JCD general secretary Matiur Rahman. However, Matiru’s father said he had a licence for the gun.
At least 15 people were injured at Jagannathpur upazila of Sunamganj district while activists of AL and BNP-backed candidates clashed over the unofficial declaration of the result.
