Government authorities have ordered the law-enforcing agencies to ensure the highest level of security across the country following Friday’s grenade blast by a handcuffed Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) operative in Gazipur police super’s office.
Immediately after the incident that left at least 12 people wounded, including journalists and policemen, a crackdown began to round up the militants of the banned Islamist outfit JMB.
Meantime, Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun yesterday made a clarion call for forming all-party committee in every mohalla to combat terrorism and militancy.
“Form committees drawing members from senior citizens, political parties and their front organizations, social organizations, educational institutions and religious leaders to fight against extortionists and militants,” the home minister said.
She made the call while talking to reporters after a discussion meeting marking the Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day at Aziz Master Academy at Manikdi in the city.
Replying to a question she said the home ministry will give guidelines for constituting the committees.
“The days are not so far off when terrorism and militancy will be rooted out,” she added.
JMB has been campaigning for establishment of Islamic rule in the country. The outfit was banned after the staging of synchronized serial bombings in all but one of the 64 district headquarters on August 21, 2004.
Several hundred JMB members were arrested since then. Six top leaders, including their chief Shaikh Abdur Rahman, were hanged to death during the rule of the last caretaker government.
