The government yesterday appointed new vice chancellors (VCs) of another five public universities — Jahangirnagar, Rajshahi, Chittagong, Shahajalal and Islamic universities, education ministry sources said.
Earlier on Monday, new VCs were appointed for two other public universities– National University (NU) and Jagannath University (JNU). And the Dhaka University got a new VC last month.
Of the five appointed yesterday, Prof Sharif Enamul Kabir is VC of Jahangirnagar University (JU), Abdus Sobahan is VC of Rajshahi University, Prof Dr Abu Yusuf Alam is VC of Chittagong University, Dr Gazi Salehuddin is VC of Shahajalal Science and Technology University, Sylhet, and Dr Alauddin is VC of Islamic University, Kushtia.
Dr Sharif, professor of chemistry at the JU, replaced acting VC Muniruzzaman.
Dr Sobahan, professor of physics and electronics engineering at the RU, replaces Pro VC Mamnunul Keramat, who was holding additional charge of VC.
Dr Yusuf Alam, professor of Islamic history and culture at the CU, was appointed new VC in place of Dr Badiul Alam.
Bangladesh Chhatra League was demonstrating on the campus for long demanding Badiul Alam’s resignation.
Dr Salehuddin, dean of social sciences faculty at the CU, replaced Dr Aminul Islam.
Dr Alauddin, professor of applied chemistry at Islamic University, is now VC of the same university.
On Monday, the government appointed DU history professor Kazi Shahidullah and physics professor Dr Mesbah Uddin Ahmed as VCs of the NU and JNU respectively.
Last month, DU mass communication and journalism professor AAMS Arefin Siddique was appointed VC of the university.
