The House will adopt an obituary reference today on the massacre of army officers in a bloody mutiny by some disgruntled Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) members at the BDR headquarters at Pilkhana.
The sitting of parliament will also be adjourned immediately after adoption of the obituary motion suspending other scheduled businesses included in the orders of the day for being transacted.
Speaker Abdul Hamid at his office yesterday said the House will mourn the deaths through adoption of the resolution.
Chief Whip Abdus Shahid told The Daily Star over the telephone that today’s sitting of parliament will be adjourned after adopting the obituary reference.
Parliament Secretariat officials said the sitting of parliament is conventionally adjourned immediately after adoption of obituary references on death of only sitting lawmakers.
The treasury bench decided to pass obituary motion in parliament to mourn and pay tribute to the slain army officers and express condolence to the bereaved families alongside observing a three-day mourning from Friday.
Parliament Secretariat officials said the speaker last afternoon approved the supplementary orders of the day to move the obituary motion himself at the beginning of resumption of the House proceedings after a two-day recess.
A brief discussion on the resolution might be held with participation of the leader of the House and some senior lawmakers of both the treasury and opposition benches, they said.
If the speaker suspends the scheduled business of today’s sitting after adoption of the obituary reference, the business stipulated in the orders of the day will not take place.
Seven bills are included in the day’s orders to be placed in parliament along with regular question-answer session, disposal of call attention notices on matters of public importance and discussion on the thanks-giving motion on the president’s address.
The BNP-led opposition lawmakers on Wednesday, the day the mutiny at the BDR headquarters broke out, submitted a number of adjourn motions to the Parliament Secretariat for discussion.
The speaker is yet to decide on the demands for holding discussion adjourning the scheduled business of the sitting.
Home Minister Sahara Khatun on Thursday night made a statement informing the House about the bloody mutiny.
