Architect of Bashundhara City Mohammad Foyez Ullah firmly believes the fire that broke out in the country’s largest shopping complex could be extinguished in only 10 minutes had the fire fighting systems worked or used in time.
He also thinks that the fire could be doused with the help of interior system of the building. He said all the modern equipment, including automated fire, smoke and heat detectors are kept in the building.
“The building is a model one where every single equipment is installed to douse the fire within some minutes. But I don’t know what was wrong and ran to safety.
Several ambulances from Red Crescent and Fire Service stood by to rush the victims to hospitals.
Vehicular movement on Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue, Panthapath, Sonargaon Road and Green Road were suspended so that fire-fighters and others could reach the spot.
According to sources, the one who died was identified as Baki Billa, a member of Basundhara’s own fire fighting department.
He slipped and fell trying to climb down a rope from top of the building. Three others however made safe landing.
An army chopper rescued another fireman from the rooftop as the floors beneath burned fiercely.
Those who were in the cine complex and the gymnasium in the shopping centre were taken out of the building through gates on the western side.
Casualties would have been much higher had all the offices not been closed on weekends.
