Just ahead of parliamentary by-elections the formation of a committee to investigate corruption allegations against former speaker Jamiruddin Sircar was ‘wrong and illogical’, said BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain yesterday.

“Hasty formation of the probe committee reflects the government’s ill motives,” he told reporters at his Armanitola residence.

He said the government formed the probe body to influence the by-polls, otherwise they could have formed it after the election.

Sircar is running as a BNP candidate in the upcoming by-election to Bogra-6 constituency.

The BNP secretary general said his party and Sircar demanded enquiry into allegations against all speakers since 1972 but the present speaker said only audit would be done against all speakers.

“It is discriminatory to conduct enquiry into the allegations against one speaker and audit against others,” Delwar said.

Speaker Abdul Hamid on Thursday formed an all-party parliamentary probe committee headed by Awami League lawmaker Fazle Rabbi Mia to investigate the corruption charges against Sircar.
