The cabinet is expected to approve in its next meeting the much-awaited Child Labour Eradication Policy for welfare and protection of working children, said Labour and Employment Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain.
“The cabinet is expected to review (draft) policy in the next cabinet meeting for approval,” an official said quoting the minister as Secretary General of Save the Children Sweden-Denmark Mimi Jakobsen called on him at his secretariat office yesterday.
The official added that the government was committed to take all possible steps for millions of working children and thanked Save the Children for its initiatives for the betterment of underprivileged children.
Jakobsen, a Danish politician and former minister of her country, thanked the minister for his commitment to work in collaboration with Save the Children for implementation of the policy.
“The policy would bring benefit not only to the children of Bangladesh but also inspire other countries to eradicate child labour,” a Save the Children spokeswoman quoted her as saying.
Jakobsen committed to support the children who are affected by the devastating cyclone Aila. She said her organisation in cooperation with Danish foreign ministry would support and protect the children in child-friendly spaces established by Save the Children in Bangladesh.
“We will contribute to other urgent needs of children like water and sanitation,” she said.
The spokeswomen said their organisation worked the last several years with the Ministry of Labour and Employment in devising ways to reduce hazards of working children in workplaces and drafting the policy.
