Six people, including an upazila chairman, were killed and around 30 bus passengers were injured in a road accident on Dhaka-Rajshahi highway at Senbagh under Puthia upazila of Rajshahi district early yesterday.
Puthia police sources said that a Rajshahi-bound passenger bus of Hanif Paribahan from Dhaka collided head-on with a truck at Senbagh, leaving three people including the upazila chairman dead on the spot.
On information, police rushed to the spot and rescued the injured with the help of local people. Of the injured, 20 were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) in critical condition where three more succumbed to their injuries.
The rest of the injured were admitted to Puthia health complex.
The deceased were identified as Puthia upazila chairman Abu Amin Md Wayezul Haque Bachchu, 55, Rajshahi Haripur union parishad member Amzad Hossain, 45, Hanif Paribahan bus supervisor Hamidul Haque, 30, truck helper Jewel Rana, 20, Panna Khatun, 33, of Kalia village in Chapainawabganj and Masud Rana, 35, of Boalia in Rajshahi city.
The injured, admitted to RMCH, were identified as Entaj, 32, Farhad, 22, Asadul, 55, Shahanara, 55, Sabdul, 45, advocate Rabbi, 40, Mominul, 27, Rafiqul, 35, Rana, 18, Nazrul, 30, Rubel, 35, Shilpi, 25, Shahnaz, 28, Habibur, 25, Nurul Islam, 25, Masud, 30 and an unidentified youth of about 30.
