Speaker Abdul Hamid yesterday said lawmakers would see a rise in their remuneration and allowances, as they are not drawing much.
“We are considering hiking remuneration and allowances of members of parliament (MPs),” the speaker said at a function at the Jatiya Sangsad Media Centre while handing over keys to the offices of MPs.
The parliament secretariat yesterday handed over offices to 92 MPs in the first phase of allocating offices to lawmakers at the old MPs’ hostel on the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban premises.
The offices for the rest will be allocated gradually as the parliament secretariat is having the offices readied.
On the first day, 60 lawmakers from Awami League (AL), 21 from BNP, 10 from Jatiya Party and one independent legislator received allocation letters and keys to their offices.
“Lawmakers will also be provided with offices at upazila level so that they can perform their duties properly,” Hamid said.
He said the parliament secretariat would bear expenditure of one staff for each lawmaker and Tk500 will be allocated each month to maintain the office, he said.
The speaker said lawmakers will get vehicles and which they will be able to own in exchange for a token money after their five-year tenure.
The speaker reminded the lawmakers about a set of directives while using the offices. None can use the office after 10:00 pm; they are not allowed to use the office for personal purpose.
“The allocation will be cancelled if anyone violates the instructions,” Hamid said.
Deputy Speaker Shawkat Ali, Chief Whip Abdus Shahid and Opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farrouque, among others, were present at the function.
