Crime, extortion still rule Karwan Bazar

Karwan Bazar, the largest wholesale kitchen market in the capital, remains a safe haven for extortionists, who operate with impunity thanks to backing from a section of law enforcers.After the triple-murder a week ago, police vigilance there has increased, yet extortion is still rampant.The Daily Star correspondents have talked to traders in Karwan Bazar several times since three including two businessmen were killed on June 26 apparently in reprisal for efforts to stop extortion.Most of those interviewed said they still had to pay large sums to the crime gangs to stay in business.Police however claim the situation has improved after ... Drive starts to free encroached Khulna canals

Khulna City Corporation launched a drive yesterday to recover canals from encroachers and demolish illegal structures that are hampering storm-water drainage through the canals.Sources said around 20 shops, two houses, a school and a madrasa were torn down during day-1 of the drive.Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque inaugurated the eviction drive levelling an embankment illegally constructed on the Nirala canal at Sabujbag in the city.The drive went on along the canal up to Gallamari area in presence of the panel mayor, ward councillors, officials and employees of the Khulna City Corporation and leaders of a number of professional and socio-cultural organisations ... Govt braces for daunting task

The government faces a mammoth task of completing issuing of birth certificates to 44.3 percent of the total population in less than a year. It took three years to register 55.7 percent citizens after the Birth and Death Registration Act was enforced in 2006.It will be really tough to complete the birth registration process by June 2010 as only 15.7 percent population could be provided with birth certificates in a year since March 2008, speakers said at the inaugural ceremony of the National Birth Registration Day yesterday.However, Health and Family Welfare Minister AFM Ruhal Haque said at yesterday's function, "We ... Flashflood grips low-lying areas

Heavy downpour triggered flash flood in low-lying areas of several districts including Netrakona, Sunamganj, Sylhet and Feni yesterday leaving thousands of people marooned.Two rivers -- Surma in Sunamganj and Muhuri in Parshuram are flowing 36 cm and 45 cm above the danger mark respectively.Road communications between Dhaka and other districts are now under threat as roads leading to main ferry ghats have already been inundated due to heavy rain mounting sufferings of passengers.Road communications between Netrakona and Durgapur, Kalmakanda and Khaliajuri upazila were cut off.The connecting road to Mawa ferry ghat has already gone under water while two pontoons ... Missions to be asked to find out ‘godfathers’

The government will ask Bangladesh missions abroad to send reports on 'godfathers' who control the recruitment process of workers in different countries, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni said yesterday.“The cost for migration of workers is very high. There are middlemen on both the sides. Protesters threaten to resign en masse

New technology to save urea, increase yield

Bangladesh can become self-sufficient in urea fertiliser and reduce the production cost of rice drastically by using urea deep placement (UDP) technology, agriculturists said.The UDP technology requires around 50 percent less urea but it can increase the yield by 25 percent more, they noted.The annual demand for urea is now around 28 lakh metric tons while its annual domestic production is about 18 lakh metric tons. The current annual production of fertiliser would be enough for the country if UDP technology can be widely used, they said.As a result, there would be no need to import fertiliser and Bangladesh also ... Captured cadres taken to Rajshahi for remand
