Commerce Minister Faruk Khan yesterday urged the ready-made garment (RMG) manufacturers and exporters to play a ‘responsible role’ so that any untoward incident in the garment sector can be averted.
He said the garments manufacturers will not use ‘only good branded cars wearing brand suits’ but they have to ensure the workers’ welfare in the factories to avoid workers unrest.
The minister said this while distributing cheques among the dependants of workers killed in various incidents including the recent worker unrest in Ashulia, at Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) office.
He said a section of unidentified miscreants had vandalised the garment factories and set fire to those during Ashulia unrest, which was a pre-planned conspiracy to damage the garment sector.
“We are investigating the latest labour unrest seriously whether there was any involvement of the administration or not. If we find any involvement of the people of the administration in the incident, we would take stern action against them,” Khan warned.
He said the government would not spare anybody involved in the heinous arson attack on the garment factories at Ashulia.
He reiterated that the government would form a temporary labour court at Ashulia, Savar and a part of Gazipur industrial area to settle the disputes between factory owners and workers.
BGMEA gave the cheque of Tk 1 lakh each to 37 deceased garment workers’ families under group insurance programme.
The commerce minister also asked the mid-level managers of the factories to be more responsible so that they can avert any unrest.
BGMEA also distributed Tk 1,000 along with education materials to each of 50 school-going children of the garment workers.
Abdus Salam Murshedy, BGMEA president, moderated the function.
